BALKAN ROADTRIP

We will embark on this trip with rented vans from Slovenia, exploring the most beautiful sights of Bosnia and Montenegro. The total journey covers approximately 1800 km. Our first stop and overnight stay in Bosnia will be at a camp by the Una River. The following day, we head to the town of Jajce. Just a few kilometers from the town, you will find the Big and Small Pliva Lakes, featuring historical medieval water mills known as “Mlinčići” or Little Mills. These 19 wooden mills, covered with shingles, were originally built for grinding grain. A visit to these mills is a special experience.

Arrival in Jajce, which is increasingly transitioning from a pilgrimage site for Yugoslav nostalgics to a tourist destination for nature lovers. It is renowned for its beautiful waterfall located in the town center. Jajce is also the site where the foundations of the second Yugoslavia were laid. We continue our journey southward. Along the way, we visit Janjske Otoke – a settlement of small houses interwoven with beautiful waterfalls and tranquility that must be experienced.

Next stop is the city of Konjic, a charming place with untouched nature surrounded by rich history and cultural preservation of old crafts. Near Konjic, you can visit the famous Tito’s bunker, built as a refuge for Josip Broz Tito and 350 of his closest associates in case of a nuclear attack. Tour of the bunker.

We then embark on another unforgettable experience: rafting on the Neretva River. The Neretva is fast, cold, and emerald green. Rafting through deep canyons offers an unforgettable experience for those who enjoy adrenaline and natural beauty. We will navigate 23 km of canyons, waterfalls, small bays, and clear tributaries.

Only 20 km from Konjic is Boračko Lake. The road from Konjic is winding, and we will stop at a panoramic point to enjoy the beautiful view of the lake and surrounding hills. The lake is very popular and ideal for relaxation, swimming, and various activities.

Finally, we arrive in Sarajevo. We will explore the city’s most beautiful historical and cultural sights, including a stroll through Baščaršija, the heart and soul of the city, filled with shops, cafes, and ćevapi places.

We will then head towards Višegrad to see the famous bridge over the Drina River, which is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. We briefly enter Serbia and travel through the Mokra Gora valley, crossing the Šargan Pass. We will ride the famous narrow-gauge railway, the Šargan Eight. After leaving Serbia, we enter Montenegro. Durmitor National Park offers majestic landscapes and diverse opportunities for active holidays, while hidden spots allow for relaxation amidst unspoiled nature. Durmitor is primarily about mountains and everything related – an ideal place for hikers. We will climb Bobotov Kuk (2523 m) and spend the night in a mountain hut. The ascent to Bobotov Kuk is technically easy. Throughout, we will enjoy views of the Black Lake and gradually ascend into the high mountain world. The next day, after the strenuous climb, we will relax by the river or lake.

We then drive towards Nikšić to visit the Ostrog Monastery. The road to the monastery is a journey through Montenegro’s countryside. It is visible from several kilometers away and resembles the Predjama Castle in Slovenia, seeming to be embedded in the cliff.

We head back home, but the road trip wouldn’t be complete without visiting Mostar. We will stop in the old part of the city, which is very attractive with its minarets, shops, artisan workshops, cafes, and interesting architecture. We will also see the famous stone bridge.

We bid farewell to Bosnia and return home through Croatia, with a final stop to enjoy and swim in the sea.

We recommend this program to those who seek an adventurous, travel-oriented, and free way to discover the world.

Why travel with us?

A road trip through the Balkans is a unique program. We visit the most beautiful sights of Bosnia and Montenegro. The program includes many outdoor activities as well as historical and cultural landmarks.

About the country

Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in the western Balkans, sharing its western and northern borders with Croatia, the eastern border with Serbia, and the southeastern border with Montenegro. The country’s landscape is mainly shaped by the Dinaric Alps – with the highest peak being Maglić at 2386 meters – and descends into the Pannonian Basin in the northeast; a 26-kilometer strip in the south touches the Adriatic Sea. Most of the land is karstic. The northern part is covered by extensive forests, while the southern part often features fertile soil that is more frequently cultivated.

The major rivers are the Bosnia and Sava Rivers, along with their tributaries Una, Drina, and Vrbas. The country has four national parks: Sutjeska National Park, Kozara National Park, Una National Park, and Drina National Park.

The name is thought to originate from the Bosna River, which flowed through the Bosnian center. According to philologist Anton Mayer, the name Bosnia might derive from the Illyrian “bas-an-as”, stemming from the Proto-Indo-European root “bos” or “bogh,” meaning “flowing water.” According to medieval expert William Miller, Slavic settlers in Bosnia adapted the Latin designation Basante, naming the river Bosna and themselves Bosniaks.

The name Herzegovina comes from the title of Bosnian magnate Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, “Herceg (Duke) of Hum and the Coast.”

Montenegro was independent under the name Duklja since 1042 and successfully resisted Ottoman Turkish invasions. Its independence was internationally recognized after the military successes of Prince Nikola at the Berlin Congress in 1878. After World War I, the Kingdom of Montenegro united with Serbia, and soon after with other South Slavic nations from the former Austro-Hungary, forming a unified Yugoslav state.

After the breakup of Yugoslavia, Montenegro did not opt for independence but in 1992 formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) with Serbia, which was renamed to the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 2003. In 2006, a referendum was held in which the majority opted for an independent state.

In hrana. So naju strašili, da bova lačna, ker hrana ni najboljša. Pa so skoraj vse žitne ploščice prišle nazaj z nama v Slovenijo. Dobre kuharje smo imeli.
Brez pripomb.
  5. Koliko denarja si približno dodatno porabil/-a v Tanzaniji? Za celo potovanje ( agencija, testiranja, viza, osebna poraba) sva na osebo porabila cca 2.750 EUR. Res je, da nisva kupovala slik in lesenih izdelkov, a sva šla na vse izlete, si privoščila kako pivo, koktejle, odlične ribe, kupila začimbe, majhne spominke.

Zdravo,

Lep pozdrav,
Marta
